Laundry in a cupboard

Interior designer Lydia Maskiell helped her clients turn this linen cupboard off the hallway into a practical laundry.

“This was somewhat of a blank canvas, as it had minimal shelving,” says Lydia. “The space wasn’t utilised to its full potential, as there was a lot of wasted space with the cupboard depth. The client wanted a laundry space closer to the main living quarters, which was the perfect opportunity to explore the deep, forgotten cupboard off the hallway.”

At 1m x 1.5m, this European-style laundry still has all the practical features you’d expect from a laundry, including a stacked washer and dryer, sink, and storage.

“Maximising every bit of space is essential to designing a small area. With a width of 1.5m, a stacked washing machine and dryer was a great option, allowing us to use the remainder of the space for a sink and pull-out hampers. We had more depth than the normal 600mm to play with, which we used to create more storage with a shallow ledge at the back of the sink bench. As the laundry joinery is housed in a closet, open storage was more useful and an opportunity to display decorative baskets.”
