Resort Style Oasis
Once an outdated and underutilised space, this backyard now feels like a luxe escape for homeowners Jarrod and Sophie Snow.

Gold Coast couple Jarrod and Sophie Snow (@therenoproject_) renovated their dated backyard, which included an existing pool, over a period of six months.
“There used to be brick pavers surrounding the pool and an old garden shed,” recalls Sofie. “The black pool fencing detracted from the overall aesthetic, while the existing garden provided minimal privacy. The only redeeming feature we had to work with was the pool tiles, which we aimed to enhance and incorporate into our redesign.”
Jarrod, a carpenter by trade, tackled most of the work himself, including demolition and preparation for the concrete work, and retiling part of the pool. The couple also took charge of planting new garden beds, painting, and installing the glass fence. “The only tasks we outsourced were pouring the concrete and the block work for the garden bed, as well as the rendering,” says Sophie.
The pool – now the glistening jewel of this outdoor space – has been given a modern makeover thanks to the white concrete surround. “We removed the brown brick pavers around the pool. In their place, we poured a sleek white concrete surround, which we honed, giving the pool area a fresh and modern look.”
After clearing the existing garden bed and garden shed, there was ample space to add a barbecue pavilion and a custom daybed, also constructed by Jarrod. “The pavilion provided us with the perfect spot for entertaining, and the daybed is a comfortable place to relax and enjoy the view of the pool.”
Privacy from the neighbours was also at the top of the agenda, so a new boundary fence was added, along with dense planting of tropical plants. “To achieve a resort-style ambience, we incorporated tropical plants and succulents, while preserving a few existing palm trees, creating a lush, inviting oasis.”
Sofie says the backyard now feels like she’s in a different country. “Each element was carefully selected to evoke a serene and inviting environment, making our outdoor space a true retreat.”
