Space Saving Laundry

Seasoned renovators Cindy and Dan Mead (@reno.diary) transformed their old laundry (complete with peeling melamine benchtops and dated terracotta tiles) into a practical washroom with a whole lot of space-saving features.

The couple needed to think creatively to utilise every inch of the 1.8 x 3m room. “Previously, the laundry had a U-shaped layout that didn’t capitalise on the space,” recalls Cindy. “We worked with The Blue Space to install a modular laundry by ADP and changed the layout to an L-shape.”

“Some of the smart features we included are floor-to-ceiling cupboards and drawers, a built-in laundry hamper, a built-in ironing board, and – my favourite! – the extendable ceiling-mounted and remote-controlled electric clothesline,” Cindy says. “We also added a gas strut window, which opens out onto our outdoor kitchen.”

Inspired by Three Birds Renovations, Cindy and Dan decided to install the washer and dryer off the floor. “We raised them up to eye level to work in with our cabinetry. It is so nice not having to bend down to load the washer and dryer; we don’t think we could ever go back to a washer and dryer on the floor again. They both sit on 20mm stone rather than sitting directly on the cabinetry, so there is a bit of extra reinforcement underneath them.”
